Recycling / Waste recovery

Recycling / Waste recovery

Presentation

Aube's wealth of sources of material

A sector with great potential in the area due to nearby sources of material and logistics facilities:

  •  Less than 2 hours from Ile de France, Orléans, Nancy, Reims and Dijon
  • A5, A26 and A19 motorway links, the Paris-Belfort rail line and river connections (regular 1,500-tonne barge shipments between Le Havre, Paris and Nogent-sur-Seine)
  • Population of 16 million within 150 km

Fast-growing waste recovery industry

  • Recycling: WEEE and white goods, PVC joinery, paper for cardboard production
  • Biomass operations: dry (combustion, gasification and pyrolysis), wet (methanation) and biofuel production
Latest development: a straw and wood heating plant in the heart of Troyes (SEM Energie)
  • Renewable energy
    - Wind: France's largest stock of wind turbines, with 617 turbines in Champagne-Ardenne (and a further 498 planned).
Aube has 200 wind turbines operated by Eolfi (a subsidiary of Veolia), Enel Green Power, Enercon, Nordex, REpower, Vestas and Gamesa.
    - Solar PV: recent construction of a 22-hectare solar power plant in Romilly-sur-Seine; capacity of 7.5 MWp, enough power for the needs of 3,700 people per year.

Dynamism in the sector

  • The Aube Industrial Ecology Club (CEIA) includes manufacturers, the Aube district council, the UTT, the CCI, ADEME and the regional environment, development and housing department. Its goals are to share experience, contribute to strategic industrial thinking about sustainable development and promote best practice.
The club is involved into many programs such as COMETHE: process about industrial ecology in business parks and Biogaz Vallée.

  • Biogaz Vallée®: France's methanation cluster, created on the initiative of industrial players and the Aube district council, is now a thriving centre for businesses (over 40), partners and high-level researchers.
Its purpose: to establish a biogas eco-industry for the long term by encouraging innovative structural projects
Its missions: to unite, stimulate and support the industrial and scientific sector of methanation in order to accelerate construction and develop a potential that is still underexploited in France.

In progress : creation of an analytical centre combined with a pre-industrial pilot, the first of its kind in France, to improve the reliability and precision of methane potential and industrial trials.

  • Journées Eole Industrie (wind turbine industry days) in the region – organised by France Energie Eolienne in June 2013: business encounters that led to 1,500 appointments with players in the sector.
